What are fibroids?
Fibroids, or myomas, are benign formations that develop in the muscular layer of the uterus. They can cause various symptoms, such as heavy menstrual bleeding, abdominal pain, and reproductive issues. Removing fibroids can significantly improve quality of life and prevent possible complications.
What is vaginal conservative myomectomy?
Vaginal conservative myomectomy is a surgical procedure that involves removing fibroids through the vagina. This method is minimally invasive, meaning less pain, faster recovery, and reduced risk of complications compared to traditional surgical methods. Additionally, the absence of abdominal incisions eliminates complications such as postoperative hernias, seromas, and wound dehiscence.
Preparation for the Procedure
Before the procedure, several tests are needed to assess overall health:
- Complete blood count with formula
- Biochemical blood test
- Rh factor and blood type
- Coagulogram
- Blood glucose
- General urinalysis
- Consultation with a therapist + ECG, dentist consultation (to exclude any loose teeth)
- Chest X-ray (if the previous one was done a year ago)
- Consultation with relevant specialists if there are chronic diseases (e.g., endocrinologist for diabetes, pulmonologist for asthma, etc.)
How is the procedure performed?
- Anesthesia: For your comfort, the procedure is usually performed under general or spinal anesthesia.
- Fibroid removal: A small incision is made in the vagina to access the fibroid.
- Using special surgical instruments, the fibroids are removed.
- Completion of the procedure: After removing the fibroids, the incisions are sutured, and you will be allowed to rest under medical supervision. Staying in the intensive care unit is not mandatory, and in most cases, you will be transferred to a general ward.
Postoperative Period
After the procedure, mild lower abdominal pain and light bloody discharge may occur for several days. It is important to avoid heavy physical activity and sexual intercourse for 1.5 months to ensure complete healing. The hospital stay usually ranges from 24 to 72 hours.
Advantages of Vaginal Conservative Myomectomy
- Minimally invasive: The surgery is performed without abdominal incisions.
- Fast recovery: Most patients can return to normal life within a few days after the procedure.
- Reduced risk of complications: Lower risk of infections and other complications compared to traditional surgery.
